An interest in 'Order and Chaos in Nature and Art' both through self observation and in relation to Gilles Deleuze and Sun Tzu has shaped my practice. Though order and chaos remain somewhat abstract subjective concepts, Deleuze's writings on ‘rhythm’, ‘territory’, ‘hecceity’ and ‘assemblage’ as well as Sun Tzu's writings about form and formlessness have proved fruitful. By looking at the concepts of nature, chance and change my art tries to get closer to an understanding of what nature in its outer form and inner configuration means. It looks at the consequences of this and assesses the forces of order and chaos in my work. When on North Uist, I noticed how important it is to appreciate the fabric of daily life in which artifacts are placed. What has impressed me are the changes natural materials are exposed to and the effect this has on the viewer when placed in a different context. The work carried out in my practice is a comment on the simplicities and complexities in nature.
